RE:STORE – a Civic Circular Innovation Lab

2021-2023

RE:STORE, based in Satsuma-sendai city, is a civic circular innovation lab that creates space for people to explore harmonious relationships between humans and nature in daily life. Since its establishment in 2022, RE:STORE has hosted an array of workshops, exhibitions, and communal gatherings aimed at exploring, rediscovering and reproposing the value of regional resources that are often overlooked. RE:STORE connects resources, people and ideas across borders and administrative divisions.

Re:public has contributed to the concept design and development of Satsuma-sendai city’s “Satsuma Future Commons” concept from 2019-2022, with a view to catalyse dynamic shifts in policy and industry towards a circular city. RE:STORE is one of our independent initiatives, responding to concerns about the dominance of attractive terms like “circular” which may overwrite regionally rooted perspectives: we hope for RE:STORE to serve as a hub for knowledge sharing and bottom-up exploration with citizens, founded on the unique qualities of the land.

Reusing a renovated “akiya” (vacant building) of a former rice shop situated in a shopping street, RE:STORE is equipped with tools and materials for crafts, worktables, chairs, screens and more to accomodate various spatial uses. Several exhibitions and workshops have been held in the space, inviting lecturers and guests from both Japan and abroad. Re:public aims to think and practice locally together with citizens, academic/ educational institutions and companies who share a common concern and interest in addressing emerging social and environmental challenges.
